Fields of Working Experiences

1. Education: Since 1996 SKUS has been implementing non-formal education intervention and projects with financial support from BNFE, Ministry of Primary & Mass Education, UNICEF, USC Canada, Bangladesh with Adult males and females, adolescents, and urban working children, in different parts of Bangladesh. Some of the current projects are-

  • Phase III- Provision of Basic Education Programme for Rohingya Children aged 3-14 years in Cox’s Bazar district based on Learning Competency Framework Approach (LCFA), supported by Unicef.
  • Education for Rohingya Refugee Children and Host Community Children in Bangladesh, supported by Plan International Bangladesh.

2. Life Skills Education: SKUS have working experience in the implementation of Life skill & Education for adolescent and young people. SKUS with financial support from USC-Canada, YPSA and BNFE implement activities in different areas of Bangladesh.

3. HIV/AIDS Prevention: SKUS has been working since 2005 in HIV and AIDS prevention field with a marginalized population including Transport workers, male and female ethnic workers, young people, Garments workers, hotel sex workers, and Injecting Drug users in Chittagong City areas. SKUS got financial support from UNICEF, ZIKSY Foundation, HASAB-YPSA Consortium, Save the Children, (Global Fund) and its own resources.

HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention is one of the important and prominent activities of SKUS. The main objective of HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention is to reduce the risk of HIV/AIDS among the people at risk. With the aim to that end, SKUS has been implementing different types of projects on HIV/AIDS since its inception. Here is sort of some HIV/AIDS programs implemented by SKUS so far are:

  • HIV/AIDS prevention and awareness activities among the child street sex workers and hotel-based sex workers of Chittagong city supported by ZIKSHY Foundation.
  • HIV /AIDS prevention project among the ethnic worker of Chittagong city-1st & 2nd phase supported by UNICEF.
  • HIV/AIDS prevention and awareness program among the transport workers in Chittagong.
  • Provision of essential harm reduction services for injecting drug users, GFATM-907.
  • Prevention of HIV and Risk reduction through workplace intervention in Garments industries/factories of Chittagong, GFATM-912.
  • Provision of HIV/AIDS orientation, Training and services to young people through scale-up youthfriendly health services(YFHS) and Life Skills Education (LSE), GFATM-902.
  • HIV/AIDS Prevention, Education & Rehabilitation of the CSWs with the support of The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation from May 2015 to April 2016.

4. Protection (Child Protection and GBV): SKUS has been implementing child protection projects since 2007. The main activities under these projects are life skills sessions, PSS, Mental Health, Case Management (Referral) advocacy, social mobilization, and community-based services. Some of the project lists are given below;

  • Life-skill education and adolescent development (LEAD ) project at slum areas in Dhaka City Corporation from June 2005 to December 2006.
  • Child protection project at Rohingya Camp in Cox’s Bazar with the support of KNH from January 2018 to July 2019.
  • Women empowerment project at Rohingya Camp in Cox’s Bazar with the support of Helping
    Hand from March 2019 to November 2019
  • Child protection and women empowerment project at Rohingya Camp in Cox’s Bazar with the support of KNH from August 2019 to December 2020.
  • Community-based child protection project at Rohingya Camp in Cox’s Bazar with the support of EDUCO from August 2019 to December 2019.
  • Safeguarding women’s and children’s rights in the Rohingya refugee crisis in Ukhiya sub-district in Bangladesh with the support of KNH Germany From November 2020 to December 2021.
  • Prevention of and Response to Sexual and Gender Based Violence against Rohingya refugee children and adolescents from March 2021 to August 2023.
  • Humanitarian assistance to the children, adolescent, youth, and their families of Rohingya and Host Communities in Cox’s Bazar with the support of Educo from January 2022 to December 2023.
  • Lifting Healthy, Empowered and Protected Girls and Women in Cox’s Bazar (LEAP) with the support of Plan International from June 2022 to June 2025.

5. Gender-based violence project: SKUS has implemented the GBV project with the support of national and international donor agencies. Some of the project lists are given below;

  • For the Women by the Women project (FWBW) at Slum areas in Dhaka city corporation from July 2005 to June 2010.
  • Improving the mental health and psychosocial well-being of Rohingya refugees with the support of MdM-F from October 2020 to June 2021 at Camp 15 in Rohingya Camp through One WomenFriendly Space.
  • Prevention of and Response to Sexual and Gender Based Violence against Rohingya refugee children and adolescents with the support of EDUCO at Camp 17 in Rohingya camp One Girls and WomenFriendly Space.
  • Improving the mental health and psychosocial well-being of Rohingya refugees (GBV project) from July to 2021 through 6 women-friendly spaces.

6. Malaria Control: SKUS has been working in malaria porn areas since 2006. Since 2007 SKUS has been implementing the Malaria Control program the financial support from Global Fund under BRAC Consortium. Malaria Awareness & Prevention Program.

7. Safe Water and Sanitation: SKUS has a handful amount of experience in the water and sanitation sector Program. It has been working in collaboration NGO Forum for Drinking Water, and the Department of public engineering for safe water and Water Supply through the pipeline in Villages and Growth Centers.

8. Health Nutrition and Family Planning: Since 1999 SKUS has been working in the sector to ensure poor and vulnerable people’s Health, Nutrition and Family Planning issues with financial support from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Action Aid Bangladesh.

9. Women Development and Empowerment Program: One of the major components of SKUS development strategy is to work for women’s development and empowerment. SKUS has been working since 1996 in this sector. SKUS provides training, education and skill education in this regard. It has organized the destitute women groups from both urban and rural areas and empowered them as well. SKUS gets financial support from Action Aid Bangladesh, the Ministry of Women and Child Affairs, the Social welfare department, the executive committee and its well-wishers.

10. Food Security and Livelihood Development: Access to and control over public resources, Agriculture, Livestock, Fish culture/aquaculture, Poultry, Trade/business, Handicrafts and Cash for work program.

11. Natural Resources Management (NRM) and Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation: Environmental conservation and restoration, sustainable natural resource management and climate change adaptation and mitigation;

12. Livelihood Early Recovery Support for flood and landslide and tornado-affected communities: SKUS implemented several projects with the financial support of UN Women, ILO, GAC, UNDP Bangladeshand other organizations. Some of the projects are mentioned below:

a. Emergency relief & rehabilitation program with the support of Gonosasto Kendro, FNB, Action Aid Bangladesh, Community people support & organization’s own source from August 1998 to till date (Need-based.)

b. Livelihood Early Recovery Support for flood and landslide affected community in Chakoria Upzilla, 1st Phase from January 2013 to March 2013 in Chakoria upazila of Cox’s bazar District

c. Livelihood Early Recovery Support for flood and landslide affected community in Chakoria Upzilla, 2nd Phase from September 2013 to March 2014 in Chakoria upazila of Cox’s bazar District.

d. Livelihood Early Recovery Support for Tornado affected community in B. Baria from September 2013 to November 2013.

e. Emergency shelter assistance for the most vulnerable households affected by cyclone Roanu in Bangladesh for Kutubdia Upazilla under Cox’s Bazar August 2016 to January 2017

f. Covid-19 response in Cox’s Bazar with the support of MDM-F, KNH Germany, Street Child UK, EDUCO from April 2020.

g. Means to Lead project for Rohingya and Host community women and girls in Rohingya camp and host community supported by UN-Women. It is a livelihood-related vocation training program

h. Market-driven General caregiving training program for unemployed youth in Ukhiya supported by ILO, GAC and a2i. It is a skill development program

13. Livelihood Skill Training to selected urban working children of BEHTRUWC project: SKUS implemented Livelihood Skills Training among 955 Livelihood Skills Training on i) Block, Batik and Screenprint, ii) Jori, Chumki and Embroidery, iii) Industrial Sewing, iv) Handicraft for Urban Working Children in Chittagong City Corporation areas with aims at to create opportunities either to enhance their family livelihood skills or to expand their traditional family business for sustainable income and livelihood. Out of the total 955 project beneficiaries SKUS helped in providing full-time/part-time jobsto 338 learners in different outlets like butik shops, screenprint factories, embroidery houses, tailoring shops and small entrepreneurs.

14. Vocational Training on SKUS technical training centre: In 2023 SKUS established a Technical training centre named SKUS Technical Training Center (JPTTC) for short course training operation with the approval from Bangladesh Technical Board. SKUS has been providing training on various trades i) Block Batik and printing, ii)Refrigerator and Air-conditioning iii) industrial Sewing machine operation and Maintenance iv) Dressmaking and Tailoring, v) computer Office Application vi) Mobile phone servicing vii) Jori, Chumki and Embroidery, viii) Beautification, and ix) Handicraft.

15. Mother and Child health care: SKUS has working experience in providing mother and child health care services. It has been implementing projects with financial support from the Ministry of Womenand Child Affairs for providing Maternity Allowance, EPI and Primary Health Care Service Projects with the support of Chittagong City Corporation, NGO foundation and through its own contribution.

16. Childless Women Safeguarding: One of the new areas where SKUS has been working to create an enabling environment and support those who are facing problems due to infertility and childlessness. This is very painful and those who have this problem are in critical condition due to stigma and discrimination. SKUS has been working since 2010 to ensure their mental support, stopping family breakdowns, divorces, land right and legal adoption issues.

17. Low-cost Housing: With financial support from National Housing Fund. GOB/ Bangladesh Bank SKUS help Ultra Poor People to build low-cost houses since July 2006.

18. Disabled rehabilitation: SKUS worked for persons with disabled people to develop their skills as well as rehabilitate them in society with financial support. It helps from the executive committee, the disabled foundation as well as the social welfare department. The main intervention of the project is social awareness, rehabilitation of disadvantaged people, capacity development etc.

19. Social Forestry & Environment Conservation: SKUS work on social forestry and environmentalconservation through community participation in its project areas.

20. Disaster Risk Management and Emergency Relief & Rehabilitation Program: SKUS has been working in Disaster risk management and emergency relief and rehabilitation effort for floods, cyclones and other disaster victims with financial support from Action Aid Bangladesh, Ministry of Food and Disaster Management.

21. Awareness-raising: SKUS has been working on different social issues to caret awareness on the issues like child right, girls’ power, eve-teasing, violence against women, voter rights and health and hygiene issues since its inception.

22. Advocacy: SKUS organize advocacy & social mobilization in social issues like dowry, women’s rights, election & voter registration awareness campaign, Eve teasing, Acid throwing etc

23. Beggar Survey and Rehabilitation Program: SKUS implemented this project from September 2011 to July 2012 with the financial support of the Directorate of Social Service titled Rehabilitation & Alternative Employment program for the People Engaged in Begging. Under the project, SKUS conduct a survey in Dhaka City Corporation and prepared a database on 1000 beggars and recommend it to the Department of Social Service for rehabilitation.
