The Bangladesh government has reallocated 32,574 Rohingya refugees so far [Feb 2024] from Cox's Bazar refugee camp to the Bhasan Char Island; there are huge gaps in getting qualified teachers and traditional schools set up to ensure quality education. Our Last Mile Learning programme comes up as an effective solution to light up the situation.
Last Mile Learning (LML), is an innovative education model from Street Child and SKUS specifically tailored for marginalised Rohingya refugee children. Operating in remote areas without access to the internet or traditional schooling, LML utilizes solar-powered mp3 devices to deliver high-quality educational content. This innovative approach empowers community adolescents to facilitate learning sessions, combining audio lessons with hands-on activities using minimal resources and low costs.
Last Mile Learning reached 672 Rohingya refugee children directly and 2,822 indirectly which improved their learning progression from 18% to 78% on an average! Last Mile Learning exemplifies this approach by understanding the contextual constraints in Bangladesh and tapping on more promising alternate learning modalities, thereby bringing education directly to children, especially girls, during emergencies when male children are often prioritised. By proactively planning and scaling up these strategies, we can ensure continuity of education and a meaningful impact on learners' lives when crises occur.
Last Mile Learning is a blended approach where children listen to the audio recording of the educational content using solar-powered mp3 devices and then practice it on paper with the support from local community youth volunteers to remove the chances of not having traditional teachers on the remote-island Bhasan Char.
